Inception [2010]

-->Christopher Nolan is that rare director who manages to grip the high-brow (intelligentsia) as well as the low-brow (popcorn churners) with elan. And Inception couldn’t really have been made by anyone but him. One of the smartest thrillers to have hit the screen in recent times, the film has managed to combine mindbender of a plot (a Nolan specialty really), breathtaking narrative speed, and stunning visual effects, into a scintillating and ingenious package. Leonardo Di Caprio, fresh out of his terrific and psychologically complex turn in Shutter Island, is once again attention-worthy as he goes about stealing ideas from people’s dreams, though he himself is trapped in an unrelenting memory warp. So when he is offered the audacious task of implanting an idea into a billionaire’s mind, it gives him the chance for retribution like nothing else. As he, along with his team, moves from one dream layer to another, we are served a plethora of spectacular moment, leaving us dazed and agape with wonderment. Though it might not be as devilishly brilliant as his earlier Memento, it sure is an extremely compelling piece of work that engages both viscerally and intellectually.

That's great news Shubhajit, that you were able to see this, and I must say I quite agree with the summary judgement here! Di Caprio has indeed had two great turns this year, and I dare say INCEPTION will improve on repeat viewing when it's cryptic machinations become more narratively lucid, if that's at all possible. Ha!

Wonderful capsule assessment.

Thanks a lot Sam. Yeah, I'd received a few days off the week prior to last week, and I was able to rush off to Calcutta for a few days & watch the film :)

Di Caprio is really going from strength to strength. Difficult to remember the last bad movie he was part of.

You appear to love Inception, but only 4 stars, I'm curious, what prevented you from giving it a higher star rating? What were the flaws for you?

To me Inception had many interesting ideas. The problem for me was the overall pace of the movie didn't allow me to breathe and ponder these tacid ideas.

I feel Inception works best as an entertaining thrill ride, which Nolan in interviews has said was his goal. I agree Memento was better

The movie is indeed a highly entertaining piece of work. And, as you rightly observed, that might have its cons too. I quite liked the movie as my review suggests, but that doesn't mean I felt that I was in the presence of greatness - the kind that makes a movie stay with you for years to come.

I agree, the film was too fast for us to reflect on the ideas raised, but then again, that precisely was the reason why the movie was so entertaining. 4 Stars means "very good", as per my rating system, and I guess that does justice to the movie in my opinion. Thanks for stopping by.

He certainly is a director who can appeal to mainstream audiences with an intelligence largely unseen in most Hollywood blockbusters. I thoroughly enjoyed Inception.

Absolutely!!!

@Dan:
Couldn't agree with you more, Dan. He certainly belongs to a rare breed among mainstream filmmakers.

The action sequences are unique, exciting and fresh, something absent from the cinema which has since been interested at things popping towards the screen and stuff blowing up every two milliseconds. The visual effects are awesome and imaginative, and best of all they do not bring down the movie's quality one bit, rather it makes the movie more fascinating to watch.

Absolutely... the director's eye for achieving visual impact was terrific. And, what was equally appealing for me was that, he never underestimated the audience's imagination by simplifying stuff or by over-explaining every nuance or facet of its plot. Thanks for stopping by.
